The Derby Central Museum and Art Gallery houses many exhibitions and artefacts relevant to the local history of Derby. Admission is completely free, and it is a great place for people to learn about the history of the local area.
There is a fine collection of porcelain celebrating the cities links with Royal Crown Derby, a military gallery, wildlife displays, an archaeology gallery, and an exhibit reconstructing Bonnie Prince Charlies visit to the city on his way to claim the English thrown. The museum is also home to many of Joseph Wrights paintings. Joseph Wright was born in the city and was a celebrated 18th century artist. The gallery has the largest collection of the artist's work anywhere in the world.
This museum is highly recommended.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Membre Qype (36…)Derby, Royaume-Uni26811 oct. 2008

There was work going in while we were there but I still found it very fascinating and I loved the photography show. It's bigger than it looks on the outside and well worth a visit.

A good museum to visit, it includes a viking longboat, mummies and an extensive pottery collection. The museum runs over 3 floors, including a gallery of paintings on the 2nd floor. Admission is free and the gift shop offers an extensive range of gifts relating to the exhibits in the museum.

Whilst studying fine art this gallery is very helpful, it is free to get in and your free to spend as long as you want or need. Once in it is larger than it appears from the outside, there are several floors, one of which has a permanent feature on joseph Wright who is a local artist. The other parts of the gallery changes quite often and has a large range of artists exhibiting. The gallery does work with the local university as well giving studying artists a chance to learn more about layouts and working in a gallery along with actually exhibiting within one. The shop downstairs offers a wide range, from postcards and cards to small scale sculptures. These are priced quite reasonably. There is a lift and stairs so it is accessible to everyone, it is quite central to derby and just outside the main shopping areas. Well worth a visiting, even if art is not your thing, there is also an area dedicated to history of derby itself.
