Heard the expression 'too good to eat'? Well, this bakery probably comes the closest I've seen to fulfilling that saying.

Eric Lanlard, baker to the celebrity world, has just finished a TV series showcasing his speciality cupcakes and desserts. The program highlighted some of his amazing themed creations for various celebrations and store openings.

Well, you don't have to be a celebrity to enjoy his creation. Located in the slightly more 'interesting' part of Soho, the very chic storefront actually helps it blend into the neon signs of the surrounding area. However, step into the store itself and it comes across with a stylish rather than seedy ambiance.

The main draw are the cupcakes with speciality designs costing £4 and the plainer 'classics' £2.50, which are reasonable prices for London. The special designs are all topped off with edible toppings like a skuil or even Warhol's picture of Marilyn Monroe. They are quite something to behold. Even the classics look great - for example the strawberry cupcake is topped off with a fresh strawberry half.

For sure, these cupcakes will turn heads and stimulate conversation if served at one of your functions. to be fair, they do probably look better than they taste but these are pretty unique looking

My friend isn't a great one for sex shops. I, on the other hand, love a good browse in the kinky corners of London's saucier stores. So when we wandered down Brewer Street looking for a manicurist, I can imagine she was averting her eyes. Not me. Which is how I spotted Cox, Cookies and Cakes. All three of my favourite things in one store? Bingo!

'Is this a gay cake shop?' Sure looks like it, with neon signs, black marble floors, glittered walls and the feel of illicitness in every square inch. Just opened by French baker Eric Lanlard and shoe designer Patrick Cox, these are naughty cupcakes come to play! If you can tear your eyes away from the breast shaped cakes, the skull and cross bone red velvet delights and Marilyn Monroe topped confections, you'll see that they are actually substance as well as style. We tried a walnut cream cheese cupcake and it was amazing, with a lot more flavour and depth than the typical fairy cake mixture. At £2.50 for the cheapest variety, I expect good stuff. If I'm paying £4 for one, I expect an orgasm as well, a food orgasm of course!

The service. Well what can you expect from a shop selling queen cakes? Snooty gay service is what we expected and received. Listen up chaps, you catch more flies (and Yelpers) with honey than distain. My advice: gussy yourself up in your best leather chaps and saunter in here, order a coffee and a bicep cake and shake your ass back out the door. This is a small shop and black leather aprons or no, I wouldn't be hanging around.

I had one of their cupcakes and it was good. Nothing special but still yummy! But what cupcake isn't?

I seem to compare all cupcakes that I eat now from ones that come from Sprinkles in California. So to be fair, it's no fair that Cox is being compared to Sprinkles because Sprinkles is really much more than just a cupcake.

Also, these cupcakes are a bit pricey.

Welcome to a black glitzy nightclubby bakery where the staff are decked out in studded leather aprons. Cool! I might get in trouble for saying this but if George Michael ever opened a cupcake shop. I think this would be it.

Their clients include Elizabeth Hurley, Sir Elton John and I'm sure a few others.

Their prices aren't bad at all. It's 2.50 if you're getting normal cupcake or £4 for their "special" ones. =) And if you eat in you get a shot of hot chocolate with the loveliest whipped cream on top! A Deal if you ask me!

London's cupcakes have been proving hard to for me to like. They're usually a bit harder and dryer and these are more of that english style. Still tasty just different.

Very cool-looking cookie and cake shape opened by designer Patrick Cox just a couple of days ago. The signage and window display are incredibly eye-catching: all neon against black, and the interior is just as dazzling. Prices are reasonable, with classic cupcakes and cookies costing £2.50 and naughtier cakes (including bum cakes) costing £4. There are also cupcakes decorated with bedazzled skulls and pictures of Marilyn Monroe. CCC also sell hot beverages.


On the taste front, the triple chocolate cake I had a bite of had very creamy chocolate icing, while the chocolate malt balls lacked crunch, which was a little disappointing. I'm not a cupcake fan though, so I'm obviously not the best judge of this sort of thing!


Still, the shop is well-worth popping into just to see the decor and the exquisitely decorated cakes!

I was marched into Cox Cookies & Cake by a friend who discovered I'd never been in. "How have YOU not been in HERE before?" He had a point, I mean, I like all the things in the shop name so...

Boobie cakes! Bicep cakes! Kylie, Madonna and Monroe cakes! I had a good old giggle at the range, including the charming willy cakes, under the disdainful eye of the leather-clad guy behind the counter. This place is totally Soho and despite the less than friendly atmosphere I loved it! They even have a cookbook, and who's endorsing it with a quote on the front cover? Liz Hurley of course!

I haven't yet tried a cupcake so I can't comment on the quality, but I know JUST the person who'd love a camp cake so plan to return a buy some pressies soon. Might even treat myself to one...hmm...a bicep or a boob...which to have, which to have...

I wholly agree with Debbie above. Just dreadful cake (dry and chewy, with far too much icing).

And at almost £4 each - are you having a laugh?

Spend more money on your ingredients, and less on the (albeit rather awesome) shop, and this would have been a winner. But as is, it sucks.

I have never ever been so happy with a custom cake and cupcake order. I ordered both for my 2 year old daughter's birthday. Over the phone I gave a fairly brief description of my "vision" and they made the most beautiful cakes.

Next stop on my hunt for the perfect chocolate cupcake was Cox, who are known for their rude cupcakes but also have nice ones as well ;D The place itself is very cool. Refreshing after looking at all the cutesy cupcake shops around London. It blends in pretty well with all the sex shops around ;)


So of course since I'm looking for a good chocolate cupcake, that's precisely what I got. The prices of the basic cupcakes are reasonable, but I wouldn't go for the naughty or special cupcakes, 4 quid is FAR too much!


Now as for the eating experience.. Two negative comments. First, maybe it was just my particular cupcake, but WAY too much icing. And I love icing, but there could have been less. Second, the cake itself was just slightly dry. Not as bad as most of the cupcakes I've tried but still a bit dry, or just off, I can't even explain it.


However, those negative things are okay because the actual flavour was AWESOME. Perfect balance of rich chocolate and sweetness. I can forgive the way too much icing thing because it was perfect icing. Better yet was it was covered in mini malt balls which added an extra nice crunchy texture that I appreciated. The cake's flavour was also good, and I wasn't sure but upon inspection it looked like there were actual chocolate chips in them. I can forgive a bit of dryness for this cupcake, as it's the best I've tried yet!

For some reason, I've avoided trying the cupcakes here. I'm a little bit over cupcakes, and I've suddenly gone mad for big big slabs of the traditional stuff. And it's been a while since I had a damn good cupcake. There are a lot of places in London that get it wrong. Whilst throwing pink glitter over everything they possibly can.


And then, I discovered that cake GOD Eric Lanlard was involved. And I was excited. Patrick Cox has done a fabulous design job on this place. It's made to look like one of Soho's seedy sex shops and it does a great job. Whilst looks sexy. It's a brilliant design.


But the look of the cakes left me cold. I could see how well decorated they were, but I'm not a big fan of icing, so whilst it might be fun to nibble on marzipan nipples, on a cupcake shaped like a breast, I don't want to. Luckily, they've got normal cakes too. Yay.


But they looked like they were going to give me a heart attack. Not unlike a fancier version of Candy Cakes. Each classic is £2.50, and the fancy art cakes £4.00 each. Now, I WILL NOT Pay four quid for a cupcake. I don't care who made it. Staff are super helpful and friendly though, so I bought one lemon cake, and one triple chocolate.


Best damn lemon cake I've had in London. Cox, Cookies and Cake might be stylish, and it might even be a bit gimicky. But damn that cake is good. I love the shop, and whilst the classic cakes are that good, I'll stick to those. The novelty cakes are perfect for the tourists, which means all the more lemon cake for me.
